The fantastic Graffiti Analysis 3.0 application by Evan Roth and Chris Sugrue is now available for download! For those unfamiliar with the project, GA is an extensive ongoing study in the motion of graffiti. Custom software designed for graffiti writers creates visualizations of the often unseen gestures involved in the creation of a tag. Motion data is recorded, analyzed and archived as Graffiti Markup Language (.gml) files, a specifically formatted XML file designed to be a common open structure for archiving gestural graffiti motion data. GML files are saved in an open online database, 000000book.com, where writers can share analytical representations of their hand styles.

The 3.0 app includes the following new features:
- Input from iPhone + anything you can strap the light onto.
- Audio input which affects particles generated from the tag – perfect for live events
- Keyword based RSS .gml player / search for a keyword and let the app play all the tags
- 3D Printing Integration – Print your tags!!
- ”Interactive Architecture” – allows interaction of projected graffiti with objects that receive the projection (buildings)..
- Laser Input – tag buildings from long distances.. (need big a** monster projector)
- Stereography..

More + download at graffitianalysis.com (mac OSX only for the time being..windows/linux soon)

SimpleGeo, geo cloud services and data provider, and Stamen, creators of many beautiful data visualizations, have teamed up to release Polymaps. Polymaps is an opensource Javascript mapping framework. It’s been on Github for a while, but they are finally announcing it.

Out of the gate, Stamen has also launched a great example application, PrettyMaps, combining Natural Earth, OSM and Flickr layers. The effect is, well, pretty. Here is the continental United States at zoom level 3:

And here is Los Angeles at zoom level 8:

Stamen explains that they use the following data sources:

All the Flickr shapefiles rendered as a semi-transparent white ground on top of which all the other layers are displayed.

Urban areas from Natural Earth both as a standalone layer and combined with Flickr shapefiles for cities and neighbourhoods.

Road, highway and path data collected by the OpenStreetMap (OSM) project.

The creation of Prettymaps was much easier due to Polymaps and was almost entirely the handiwork of ex-Flickrite, now Stamenite Aaron Straup Cope. Previously, combining these layers together would have been possible with a GIS system or using custom flash, flex or silverlight code — none of which would have been viewable on an iOS device. PrettyMaps is still a bit too CPU-intensive for it to function well on mobile devices, but as Tom Carden (Stamen) put it in IM “at least there’s a path”.

This is not the first chunk of geo code that SimpleGeo has opensourced (just go check Github). They are in the business of selling geodata and geo cloud services. By releasing these tools they make it easier for companies without geoexpertise to get hooked on their services. As SimpleGeo opens up it’s market and takes on more customers we’ll see that happening. Along the way it’s a great benefit to the mapping and mobile commmunity.

Durchsehen, Exp. 01 (augmented perspective) is an installation by Daniel Franke ( daniel-franke.com ) and Markus Kison ( markuskison.de ) which includes a camera fixed onto the concrete cube sculpture that recognizes the presence of human faces within its scope. By random selection, the c++ application focuses on the bystanders and adjust its rotation; tracking the eye movements of the viewer. The software computes the corresponding angle of view projecting onto the cube the very section of the space the sculpture is blocking from the viewers eye; thus making the cube appear transparent.

The video sculpture „Durchsehen, Exp. 01 (augmented perspective)“ overwrites the common notion of perspective and plays with the significance of perspective in an art historical perspective; the work of art evades the gaze of the viewer or rather: the two are equated. The gaze of the observer coincides with the object of observance in a piece that also draws a line to former strategies of dealing with vision and depiction: the renaissance praxis of “painting on glass”. Through the real-time projection on the cube a 3dimensional depiction of 2dimensionality occurs; the catoptric turns dioptric. The framing plane of the conventional video image becomes fragmented as work and reality intertwine in an augmented perspective.

Set-Up:
D-2010. Concrete cube, PC, 2 projectors, webcam, servo motors, microcontrollers, C++ applications, tripods. 4 x 4 x 2 m.

Created by Sputnic, RACER is an analogue recreation of a computer racing game in the style of the classic WipeOut. The actions of the arcade player are directly reflected by the remote controlled model car in the level.
Live video image from the car’s perspective is sent back to the arcade. It consists of a modified vintage arcade machine, a RC model car with a wireless camera, and a self-constructed racetrack/game level made entirely from cardboard.

The car is a 1:28 model as you get them in the shops. The only modification is a plate to carry camera and lights. On the arcade side there is a basic arduino microcontroller, the remote is controlled by a different controller, both communicate via a serial cable. One part of the job is to help out when the car crashes. Arcade and track are setup in seperate rooms. The installation is highly modular and can be set up in about three hours.

This project needs our help to continue. Please donate as low as €5.00 here.

The HTML5 love continues to be doled out by Paul Irish. First, he offered up Modernizr and now, he’s teamed up with Divya Manian to create an HTML5 boilerplate which leverages best practices to get your started.

It’s essentially a good starting template of html and css and a folder structure that works. But baked into it is years of best practices from front-end development professionals. Take a peek through the source to get a feel of what’s inside. And if you think there’s too much? Delete key that badboy.

Straight from the site, here are some of the features that make this very cool:

Cross-browser compatible (IE6, yeah we got that.)

HTML5 ready. Use the new tags with certainty.

Optimal caching and compression rules for grade-A performance

Best practice site configuration defaults

Mobile browser optimizations

Progressive enhancement graceful degradation … yeah yeah we got that

IE specific classes for maximum cross-browser control

Handy .no-js and .js classes to style based on capability

Want to write unit tests but lazy? A full, hooked up test suite is waiting for you.

Javascript profiling…in IE6 and IE7? Sure, no problem.

Console.log nerfing so you won’t break anyone by mistake.

Never go wrong with your doctype or markup!

An optimal print stylesheet, performance optimized

iOS, Android, Opera Mobile-adaptable markup and CSS skeleton.

IE6 pngfix baked in.

.clearfix, .visuallyhidden classes to style things wisely and accessibly.

.htaccess file that allows proper use of HTML5 features and faster page load

CDN hosted jQuery with local fallback failsafe.

Think there’s too much? The HTML5 Boilerplate is delete-key friendly.

I’ve heard several people mention about getting some sort of HTML5 template to work from setup so it’s nice to see one completed and out in the wild. This should be a big help.

The project uses everyone’s favorite source control system Github so you can grab it from there or download a zipped up file from the site.

I have had the pleasure to start working with the awesome jQuery team on a new mobile development. Today, John announced jQuery Mobile, “a unified user interface system across all popular mobile device platforms, built on the rock-solid jQuery and jQuery UI foundation.”

Palm has sponsored the effort with other great folks, and I wrote about it over here:

When we heard that the jQuery team was putting a lot of effort towards supporting their great library on devices, we wanted to help. At first we started with devices for John to test on as he explored compatibility, but with the newly announced jQuery Mobile initiative, we wanted to do more.

What are we doing? We are going to sponsor some of the great work that will go into jQuery Mobile from jQuery team members such as the Filament Group who are well known for their work on jQuery UI and ThemeRoller. First and foremost, we want to allow the team to focus on making a great jQuery experience across the mobile Web.

Secondly, we will be working hard to make sure that webOS itself is a fantastic host for the product. This will mean testing help, and also some jQuery plugins that show off some of the great abilities of webOS (e.g. the notifications system) in a progressive way.

We are really excited to be working with the team as their launch into jQuery Mobile en force.

Here are some more details on the goals of jQuery Mobile from Mr. John Resig himself:

“The jQuery project is really excited to announce the work that we’ve been doing to bring jQuery to mobile devices. Not only is the core jQuery library being improved to work across all of the major mobile platforms, but we’re also working to release a complete, unified, mobile UI framework.

Absolutely critical to us is that jQuery and the mobile UI framework that we’re developing work across all major international mobile platforms (not just a few of the most popular platforms in North America). We’ve published a complete strategy overview detailing the work that we’re doing and a chart showing all the browsers that we’re going to support.

Right now we’re working hard, planning out the features that we want to land and doing testing against the devices that we want to support — and hoping for a release later this year.

If you wish to help, please join the discussion in the jQuery Mobile Community.

Our aim is to provide tools to build dynamic touch interfaces that will adapt gracefully to a range of device form factors. The system will include both layouts (lists, detail panes, overlays) and a rich set of form controls and UI widgets (toggles, sliders, tabs).”

It has been enjoyable to see the great touch and mobile support that YUI 3.2 is adding, and we look forward to hosting the Dojo team at Palm for one of their events. Sencha Touch and SproutCore are showing us that Web applications can feel like “native” apps on other platforms. All in all, the future for a cross platform Web application world is bright. We look forward to working with the entire community to make it happen.
